the FLYING series

Sat Mar 4, 2006, 3:39 PM

And now, ladies and gentlemen - to the FLYING series… :)
Is there anybody who doesn't like birds' shots..? (Maybe there are some who like to SHOOT birds… bla :) :P).

I like to sort the birds to three major categories:
1. The familiar, well known birds - like sparrows, doves and so on.
2. The amazing, awesome birds, which make your heart stop beatin' - like hawks and eagles.
3. The ugly, monkey-like birds - everyone have his own birds concerning this category ;).

I believe that it's too easy to get "wows" with #2, and too hard with #3… the interesting category is, of course, #1.
Everyone knows them. They're flying by your windows, standing on the pavement. They're always by your side, but actually you can't see 'em.

Many times people ask me how I shot the birds pics, which lenses do I use and so on. I'll try to explain my way and attitude about wildlife-photography.

First of all - I don't believe in "reality". There's no such thing as reality in stills photography - the reality is a 4Directions high-way (X, Y, Z - and the Time factor), the capture takes away 2 of 4Directions (yes, there's 3D shots, but it's just an illusion, nothing u can touch. In the video you may [!] have the T factor back).
So - if a photographer wants "realism", he may use some tricks, like pic without DOF (Ansel Adams' group 64), or "real" and some vivid colors and so on. There are also the nerds (;)) that believe in the god of the old film... ;).

For me - realism in photography reflects the little things that pull you into the shot. The feeling of 3D, the vivid colors, the shallow DOF, the catch-light in the eyes, the sharpness of the relevant details…
Anyway - because there's no such thing as reality, I believe I have the "right" to change the "reality" that I capture, to reality that I couldn't capture, from any reason.
You may say - "Photomanipultor", but in my view - ANY photographer is Photomanipultor. ANY photographer. :).

After this too-long foreword, to the series itself!

Sparrows

I capture these lovely sparrows (#1... :)) near my home, in Jerusalem mountains, in the same morning. I really love this series.
Photoshop: Standard contrast, brightness and levels adjustments. Nothing special or illegal :).

The Shadows Bird

My most successful shot – the only one that featured as DD :).
I capture this sunbird in my garden.
Photoshop: B&W conversion, contrast, brightness and levels adjustments.
One of the best WL-photographers I know tell me that usually, B&W conversion (in the sunbird case) done just for hiding of fault exposure… but it's not true in this case. I think ;).

Pelican

There's nothing special to say about this one..
The Bible Zoo, Jerusalem.
Photoshop: Cropping, B&W conversion, contrast, brightness and levels adjustments.
As you can see - some parts of the body has burned in the process, but there were nothing I can do about this (and I tried.. Oh, yeah).

Sun-Bird

Well, I shot this one in my garden. this is female, as the gray colors may tell you, and in that day I chased after her new two "childs" ;).
Photoshop: Cropping, contrast, brightness, saturation and levels adjustments. and of course - blurring the background to death :).
You don't need F2.8 lenses if tou know how to do this in PS :).

Hoplopterus Spinosus

Siksak, in Hevrew. Very nice bird.. I shot this one in the Bible Zoo, Jerusalem.
Photoshop: Cropping, contrast, brightness, saturation and levels adjustments, Re-position of the bird in the frame, and the blurring of the background :).

Left Your Home Behind

Just a dove. The familiar dove.
In very rare position :).
Photoshop: Cropping, contrast & brightness adjustments.

Thank u people :blowkiss:.

How high can you fly with broken wings?

Did you take all those shots of the IDF Tanks? They're amazing. Always love shots of the Merkas especially.
